What Is the Salary of an SEO Consultant in the UK?

The short answer: an employed SEO consultant in the UK typically earns between about £25,000 at entry level and £55,000 once experienced, with heads of SEO earning £56,000 and well beyond. London pays noticeably more. Independent consultants are paid differently, through day rates or monthly retainers rather than a salary. Below I break the figures down by role, location and type of work, using current UK salary data, and explain what pushes pay up or down.

I have worked in SEO since 2005 and now work as an independent consultant, so I have watched these numbers change through many years of hiring and being hired.

SEO consultant salary in the UK at a glance

Job titles in search marketing are loose, so the same work can be advertised as SEO executive, SEO specialist, SEO consultant or SEO manager. These are the typical UK ranges for employed roles in 2026:

Level Typical job titles Typical UK salary
Entry level SEO executive, junior SEO £24,000 to £26,000
Mid level SEO specialist, SEO consultant £32,000 to £45,000
Senior Senior SEO consultant, SEO manager £38,000 to £56,000
Leadership Head of SEO, SEO director £56,000 to £100,000+

Different salary surveys land in slightly different places. Indeed puts the average UK SEO manager at £38,371 a year, based on 464 reported salaries, while data built on the ONS earnings survey gives a median of £45,000 for the same job title. The National Careers Service quotes £25,000 for starters rising to £50,000 for experienced specialists. Treat any single figure as a guide rather than a fixed rate.

SEO consultant salary in London compared with the rest of the UK

London salaries sit well above the national average, mainly because the city has more large employers, more agencies and a higher cost of living.

  • SEO managers in London have a median of around £57,600, roughly 28% above the UK median.
  • Indeed’s average for SEO managers in London is £42,886, against £38,371 nationally.
  • SEO specialists in consulting firms average around £65,000 in London, compared with about £50,000 in Birmingham.

Remote work has narrowed the gap a little, as more companies hire SEO staff from anywhere in the UK, but London roles still pay a clear premium.

What freelance and independent SEO consultants earn

Independent consultants do not earn a salary at all. They charge clients by the day, by the project or through a monthly retainer, and they cover their own tools, training, holidays and pension from that income.

  • Day rates: freelancers average around £240 to £320 a day, and experienced freelancers handling technical audits charge up to £800 a day.
  • Monthly retainers: experienced independent SEO consultants in the UK usually charge between £1,000 and £5,000 a month for ongoing work.

If you are on the buying side rather than job hunting, my guide to what an SEO consultant costs to hire explains how those fees are set and what you get for them.

Why a consultant’s fee is higher than an SEO salary

Comparing a consultant’s monthly fee with an employee’s salary is a common mistake. A salary is only part of what an employee costs: there is also employer National Insurance, pension contributions, holiday, training, software subscriptions and the time spent managing them. An independent consultant carries all of those costs personally and is only paid for the time a client actually uses. If you are deciding between hiring in-house and bringing in outside help, my guide to choosing a consultant or an agency may help.

That is why many small and medium-sized businesses find that hiring an experienced independent SEO consultant for a set number of days a month works out cheaper than a full-time hire, while still giving them senior expertise.

What pushes an SEO consultant’s pay up

  • Technical skills. People who can fix site speed, indexing and structured data themselves, rather than writing tickets for developers, are paid noticeably more.
  • A proven track record. Case studies with real figures carry more weight than certificates.
  • Specialist sectors. Regulated areas such as healthcare, finance and law need careful, accurate content, and employers pay for that experience. My own specialism is SEO for healthcare and dental practices.
  • AI search skills. Getting a brand recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews is a newer skill that is in demand. I cover the approach in how to rank in ChatGPT with AI SEO.
  • Employer type. In-house roles at large brands usually pay more than small agencies, while the top independent consultants out-earn most employed roles.

How to move up the SEO salary ladder

Most people start as an SEO executive at an agency, where they learn quickly across many clients. Moving into a specialist or manager role usually takes two to five years, and the jump to head of SEO or independent consultancy depends far more on results than on time served. Clients look for the same things employers do, and my guide to what separates a strong SEO expert lists them.
